How to put on a wig: All of my wigs are adjustable at the cap!
There are straps with hooks on them that are attached to loops of fabric at the nape of the neck. Sometimes rather than hooks, there are alternative securing methos like velcro, but not often. For added security, put the dreads up and pin the fabric tracks of the wig cap to your natural hair as close to the scalp as possible with tight hair pins, then let the dreads down to cover them.

AFTERCARE
Your dreads can last you years with proper care and maintenance.
Washing your dreads: To wash loose dreads, swirl in a shampoo dilution, towel and then air dry, or place in a pillowcase and launder in a washing machine in a gentle cold water cycle with a tiny amount of gentle detergent. I like Victorias Secret detergent myself, it smells amazing.
To wash installed dreads, keep in mind these tips from Quinnsters site: Basically, your dreads will become very heavy when wet, and the only part of your hair which really needs to be washed is the scalp. You should therefore try to keep the lengths of your dreads held up and out of the way when shampooing. Try tying them all together loosely on top on your head then tip your head upside down and use one hand to shampoo, and one to hold the dreads out of the way. Alternatively, cover the lengths with a plastic bag (but some water may still run down the lengths when you rinse).
Mix up a dilute shampoo mixture in an old bottle.
Wet your scalp with a showerhead or jugs of water.
Pour the shampoo mixture all over your scalp.
Work into a lather with your fingertips, then rinse your scalp. Rinse well, because residual soap suds may give you an itchy head.
Wrap the dreads in a towel to soak up excess water, then replace the towel with a clean one when it gets too damp.
You can use a hairdryer on a low setting if you wish.
You shouldn’t need to shampoo your dreads more than once a week, and you get away with shampooing them far less frequently than that.
For day to day stinkiness, febreeze sprayed on the lengths does wonders for getting rid of cigarette smoke smells, food smells etc – but don’t spray it on your skin.
Maintaining your dreads: Over time, with wear and abuse, dreads will begin to nub or lose their tighness, or both. This is normal, it’s just like how cloth will develop numbs after many washings or how your New Rocks eventually break in and stop hurting your feet. Here are some tips on how to keep your dreads looking good for years come:
Frizzies will develop on dreads over time, they will look like little chunks of tangled up hair that stick out from the shape of the dread. It’s ok to trim these, they won’t mess the rest of the dread up, but only trim the obvious chunky parts off, as dreads are supposed to have a little bit of fuzz and texture to them naturally.
Untwisting can also happen, usually in the thick parts of my dreads, since the ends are sealed with glue and don’t tend to unravel. To deal with this, periodically twist the dread back into shape and steam or zap with a hair drier on high heat. Be very careful to keep your heat source moving along the length of the dread so you don’t crispy fry them, particularly with a hair drier. Hold the twist for a good minute so you allow the dreads to cool while still tightly twisted. I recommend doing this after every three months of regular wear, or so.
Dreads will also SMELL if you haven’t Washed them. Look up a few paragraphs for instructions.
What do I do when I need a hair cut but can’t afford it? Go the other way, of course.
Over the last 24 hours or so, I extended my a-line using wefted hair and liquid gold. Here’s a little video to show how it looks and explain a little about how I did it.
My morning has consisted of sleeping til 11, extending my hair back to the asymmetrical natural color I had back in 2006 (and it only took me half an hour!), making myself an awesome brunch of sundried tomato and goat cheese ravioli in kale and chicken stock I made from scratch that didn’t need a speck of salt, and juicing a few carrots, an apple, some ginger and a cucumber.
Now I shall procrastinate bussing to Burien to fill a prescription I don’t need for a couple days in favor of continuing to sort through my tags here and start a couple paintings before heading to Remedy to meet a friend later tonight. And it’s sunny outside.
Days like this remind me why I pay my dues so I can do what I care about doing, and not much else.
Took my blonde A-line dreads from fiercelocks as a base, and added some accent dreads. Getting them installed Monday by the ever so awesome Jonquil. These are my Europe dreads.
60 Double Enders, in #2, #4, #6, Hot Red, #22, chilli, lila, himbeere, and vampir violet. $300 for the hair, $150 to install. http://fakehair.net, or hit up the “stylist” link above.
Woke up at 8 to an email, got an idea, spent an hour and a half.. and viola! The elusive and mythical HNN t-shirt, courtesy of my Singer Quantum – not meant to embroider.. but, who is?
And then the rest of the day, I installed some dreads I’ve been making on Becky, and watched a lot of movies. Big Fish, Son of Rambo, Lucky Number Sleven, The Three Amigos and Snatch. We also drank way too much tequila. Anyway – PICTURES..
Been super into sewing lately. I’ve had a machine for quite a few years but rarely used it. In the last two weeks I’ve broken all 4 of the sewing needles I had laying around here, and spent countless hours/dollars on projects. Mostly costumes. And there’s a fair bit more to go in that department.
Here’s a picture of the long brainstormed light aerial costume, allbeit a terrible one with some really bad photoshop on the background. This is more of a perchy costume, it has little bits on it that would get mangled pretty easily. The bodice is almost completely converted, and upside down. My friend Sara Sparrow made me the shorts from a shirt I had, and the cute veil. I’m finishing up my dark version but am having issues with the bodice collapsing, so no pictures yet. If you want to see that one, come to the Pink Door when I’m performing. :)
Also got some dread action going on. One of my coworkers wants dreads, and ordered some from me just before I moved. This friday is the install. Woo!Need about 10 more dark ones and it’ll be done.
In other news – I have a real bed again! Like, with a head/foot board and everything. The last time I had more than a frame, I was 6, and I’ve only had a mattress for about 2 years now, so I could prop the bed up to set up a massage table. I’m enjoying nesting.
Hm. both of these pictures are pretty awful quality. I wonder if my lens is dirty or something..
No more day job = time to take hair orders again! Wigs start at $350, dread sets $200 or so. Hit up http://fakehair.net for pictures of juicy, colorful, custom hair.
This is a custom wig I made for Rae, who asked for an a-line in the marbled style. I keep getting better and better. This wig is fucking awesome.
This is a very fertile, active time. They all are really. I’m noticing it a lot in circumstance right now.
I’m bursting with creativity, especially in my wigmaking. I just completed an order (style wise, still needs some finishing touches) that really has my eyes sparkling for making more kickass hair for people. I have three more in the works.
Obsidian is tremendous. It’s a tremendous social challenge, to lead how I wish to lead rather than how habit would direct me to. It’s a tremendous creative challenge, to bring into reality what I’ve created in my head as snippets and sensations of atmosphere. It’s a tremendous gift. To me, to the cast, to the studio, to our audience. And it’s so much damn FUN, too. Even figuring out the challenges.
I’m noticing that it may be such that while I’m intelligent and analytical, I tend to only ENJOY being those things when it’s cause for realizing my artistic side. I may be more in my element with artists than with ubergeeks. I never would have really considered that, until this project, and seeing so many people just.. get me. Just get where I’m coming from. It feels awesome. Thank God there are so many art/geek fusions in Seattle.
I’m training my replacement at work. In doing so, I’m realizing just how much I care about my job. I’ve discovered that I actually hold some passions for medicine. I’m not sure why this hasn’t occurred to me in this way before, especially considering I spent 18 months and +$15,000 in massage school recently, but there you go.
Strangely, I’m also realizing that it’s unrealistic for me to rely on a private massage practice in any substantial financial way. My body simply cannot do 8 hours of table massage a week. I actually feel rejuvenated by the realization. It’s been stressful contemplating how to possibly make a living at massage full time.
Speaking of medical stuff – The pap and STD screening I urgently scheduled recently came back abnormal. I went in for my biopsy today, and not only am I Batman, apparently I have a cunt of steel as well. Rather than the typical wham bam cough and punch-tool, the thing held onto me like a fucking rabid terrier mouth molesting a sock. In two tries we still hadn’t gotten the sample, and I had catapulted from mild mannered adult (I’d done amazingly well, for those who know me – no one holding my hand, either!) to quivering big-eyed ouchie sorta-laughing child. MEW! Life is hard. I’m fine now. Getting up at 6am to make the appointment was worse. I’ll just keep telling myself that.
Someone I had a drink with recently said something that’s been touching me ever since, about how my photos don’t do me justice; in that I have a kindness and vulnerability about me that doesn’t come across. They added that they felt the opportunity to see it a privilege. Wow. Hard work does pay off. What a lovely compliment and attestation to the hard work I’ve done.
